Solar Eclipse

8 Apr 2024 - 12:00

Niceville

Join students and staff of Northwest Florida State College and members of the NorthWest Florida Astronomy Association in viewing a partial solar eclipse on the 8th of April. Although the eclipse will be total along a path between Mexico and Newfoundland, here on the panhandle of Florida the Sun will only be 75 percent obscured. At no time will it be safe to look at the Sun without approved eye protection. We can help with that. We will have solar telescopes setup and, as long as our supply lasts, will hand out eclipse glasses so our guest observers will be able to safely follow along with the event.

The Moon’s silhouette will first touch the Sun at 12:47PM and will leave the Sun at 3:14PM. We will be setup from 12:00AM till 3:30PM.

The location is a campus parking lot identified on the map below. X marks the spot. The parking lot will be blocked off for the safety of our guest observers and the solar equipment. Parking locations are identified by a yellow “P”.

If you can’t make the trip to view the eclipse from the path of totality, please consider joining us for this significant astronomical event. If the weather is questionable, please check the college’s Facebook page to make sure the event has not been cancelled.
